Ocean cleaning researchers say the patch contains no less than 1,800 billion pieces of plastic, representing a total weight of 80,000 tons, the equivalent of 500 large planes. About 92% of them are larger objects, while 8% are attributed to smaller, fragmented pieces called microplastics. These figures are four to 16 times higher than previous estimates. In total, the area covered would be 1.6 million km2, which is three times the size of mainland France.
