CHICAGO (CBS) – At 10:30 am Sunday, more than 200 flights were canceled at O'Hare International Airport. The average time is about 15 minutes.
Indeed, the winter storm could bring up to 12 inches of snow in northern Illinois, making it even more difficult on any of the busiest travel days of the year.
For Jake Elliott, his scheduled flight between Chicago and California was a cause for concern.
"It sounds like the worst we've been going to have for a while," Elliott said. "I lived here for 10 years before going to university and when we heard about 4 to 10 inches, we immediately called the airline."
While some O'Hare travelers wait on long lines of safety, others are stranded at the airport and forced to adjust their plans.
The Illinois Transportation Department has warned drivers on the road to plan ahead and expect heavy snowfall and high winds.
The wind speed could reach up to 40 miles at the hour, causing ice and blizzard snow conditions.
