Oregon Health & Science University will request an external review of its heart transplant program, which will begin in October.
New President Danny Jacobs said Monday that the peer review would be conducted by an outside agency to evaluate the supervisors of the cardiac transplant program; how staff are educated, trained and supervised and the quality of patient care.
"As president of the only state university health center, it is my responsibility to ensure that all Oregonians have access to the best possible care in a supportive environment," said Jacobs.
The cardiac transplant program was interrupted indefinitely after all his cardiologists left or announced their departure before the end of September. The 20 heart-pending patients in Oregon are placed on waiting lists in Seattle and San Francisco. Some patients with advanced heart failure are now receiving Providence treatment.
The peer review will likely take months and aims to allow members of the heart transplant team to share their opinions and experiences in a confidential manner so that leaders can correct the problem.
Jacobs promised that the OHSU would share as much information as possible about what the magazine reveals after its conclusion.
