Oklahoma beats the state of Oklahoma 48-47

The hopes of Oklahoma No. 6 for the college football game are still alive after escaping Oklahoma.

The Cowboys scored a touchdown with 1:03 left to cut Oklahoma's lead to 48-47. OSU, at 5-4, decided to make two, but quarterback Taylor Cornelius was behind receiver Tylan Wallace and fell incomplete.

Cornelius had found Wallace in the fourth place of a game earlier for the 24-yard score.

Oklahoma State was forced to kick back and that failed. Thanks to a late game penalty after kicking the Cowboys, Oklahoma was able to beat the allotted time and win the point victory.

Oklahoma State missed an earlier PAT

If Oklahoma State had scored an extra point earlier in the fourth quarter, the Cowboys could have been better than 49-48 with a successful PAT.

OSU tied the game at 41-41 with 12:20 to go. But the extra point of Matt Ammendola flew to the left. The loss was a snap, as Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy had to make a choice after Wallace's win in the match against TD. OSU would not have had a choice if OSU had taken the lead 42-41 earlier in the quarter.

Serious questions persist on the defense of Oklahoma

It can not be said that Oklahoma and Alabama boast of the country's two best offenses. But the Tide has a five-place lead in the standings of university football matches because of defenses.

A mid-season change at the Oklahoma defensive coordinator has not yet paid off. The Sooners surrendered 640 yards to the Cowboys, including 501 yards from Cornelius. New defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeil led three games and his unit awarded 46 or more points out of two.

As long as Oklahoma has not been improved on the defensive (do not count 14 times on the Kansas state offensive), the Sooners will need the help of the five teams above the CFP rankings to rank in the top four. The victories over West Virginia in the final week of the regular season and the Big 12 championship game will certainly increase Oklahoma's chances for the playoffs, but they are far from guaranteed by the level of defense that the Sooners play right now.

Kyler Murray continues to shine

Oklahoma halfback Trey Sermon and Kennedy Brooks saluted the Oklahoma mark on Saturday as they combined for five touchdowns. But quarterback Kyler Murray still had a great day. Murray scored 21 of 29 passes for 349 yards and one score. He also added 66 yards rushing.

If you think Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama) is the favorite of the Heisman Trophy, Murray is second. And in any year no tua, Murray would be the favorite. With a winning percentage of about 70% and the ability to score with his feet and his arm, Murray is almost ready to travel to New York as a Heisman finalist.
