Olathe's manhunt for an armed suspect who caused the closure of schools and daycare centers in the area resulted in an arrest, police said.
The arrest of a suspect was announced around 15:45. A man was arrested without incident near a wooded area and weapons were recovered, said Sgt. Logan Bonney, a spokesman for the Olathe police.
With two suspects in police custody, the police were not looking for anyone in the immediate vicinity, Bonney added.
For nearly five hours, police from Olathe and other localities in Johnson County were looking for a man who allegedly was involved in a shootout with police after escaping from a dam. road.
Police said the suspect matched the description of one of the armed robbers who had hit four convenience stores in Olathe less than two hours earlier Monday. However, the police said they could not confirm that the suspect arrested Monday was the same man as the one wanted in robberies, who are still under investigation.
Olathe police said the manhunt began shortly before 11 am when police attempted to stop a vehicle on North Ridgview Road near 119th Street.
Two men in the vehicle fled and the police arrested one of them. The other suspect was involved in a shootout with the police.
Police said that it appeared that no one had been hurt in the shooting.
The search for the second suspect lasted much of the afternoon and left the nearby schools and daycares blocked.
Melissa and Bill McMaster, who live in the area, said they had decided to leave their homes after seeing the significant police presence.
"We saw police officers armed with assault rifles," said Melissa McMaster. "We came here to be safe."
At noon, several Johnson County police departments joined the search, including the Overland Park Police Department.

In the robberies of convenience stores, two suspects were involved in the first incident. One of them, about 5 feet 5 inches, was wearing a black jacket and jeans.
The other suspect was described as being 6 feet 2 inches tall and wearing a gray cap, a black jacket with a red stripe and jeans.
One thief did three robberies, the police said. This thief has been described as having a height of about 5 feet 5 inches. In two attempts, he wore a black jacket with a red band. In the other, he was wearing a black jacket and a white hat.
