JACKSON, Miss. – Journalism professors at the University of Mississippi on Friday urged a donor to voluntarily withdraw its name from the school of journalism after a social media article criticized by Ole Miss Chancellor Jeffrey Vetter.

In a statement, faculty members asked Ed Meek, within three days, to have his name removed from the school of journalism and new media, claiming he had "violated the core values ​​of the school. and the university ".

"We invite Dr. Ed Meek to take part in a conversation about how to chart the way forward that reflects our core values ​​and should guide our future relationships with all constituents," said the faculty's statement on the website. of the school of journalism.

Meek wrote a Facebook post on Wednesday with photos of two black women in short dresses, suggesting that they illustrate problems that could economically hurt Oxford, where the university is located. Vitter condemned the post in a few hours.

"The pictures in his post suggest an unjustified racial connotation that is very offensive," wrote Vitter in a commentary under Meek's post, which has since been deleted.

One of the women on the photo wrote that the post "enjoys racist ideology and misogyny".

Vitter wrote Friday in an open letter that the removal of the Meek name should begin with the faculty of the school of journalism, go through a series of faculties and administrative committees and be finally recommended by Vitter to college administrators.

"This process is, by design, thoughtful and intentional," wrote Vitter.

Dean of Journalism Will Norton Jr. said professors did not vote to launch the process on Friday. Norton said he was trying to reach Meek and that facility officials could prepare a report for the faculty. A vote could be held if the professors meet again after the deadline. Norton said that no such meeting is planned but added "that does not mean there will not be any". Norton said "there are all sorts of subtleties" involved in the situation. Meek has remained silent since he issued an apology that he subsequently deleted.

In an editorial, the school's student newspaper on Friday called Ole Miss to remove Meek's name from school and "cut ties completely" with him.

Meek's post came after months of debate in Oxford to find out if and how to control the consumption of alcohol and the crowd around the city's iconic downtown square.
