CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The largest one-day, volunteer-led event to change the future of breast cancer is taking place across the country on Sunday.
This is the CIBC Run for the Cure and here in Calgary, thousands of people have left the Southcentre Mall in a 5-kilometer run or walk.
The event is a nationwide fundraising and awareness effort for breast cancer research and a support network for those affected.
Amanda McNally, who is now working for the company, lost her mother Penny while she was only 16 years old and has been participating with her family for over two decades.
"It's so hard that you feel that day and see all the survivors – every year it's like there's more and more – and I think it really says a lot about the cause of the disease, "says McNally.
Now that she is a mother herself, McNally adds that her participation with her own children gives her a different perspective as she completes the journey with her team, aptly named "Every Penny Counts".
"One is a girl and that's how I hold hands when I'm participating now – it's a different perspective, it's a different feeling."

Over the past 20 years, the Canadian Cancer Society has invested millions of dollars in cancer research, support services, education and advocacy.
The goal is not only to save lives, but to improve the quality of life of those affected and reduce breast cancer cases in Canada.
