One person was killed and 44 wounded, three seriously, when a commuter train derailed near Barcelona due to a landslide caused by heavy rains, rescue services and railway company announced Spanish.

Two wagons from a convoy of six people left the railway at 6:15 am (0515 GMT) near the town of Vacarisses, 35 km northeast of Barcelona, ​​emergency services announced on Twitter .

Of the 131 people on board, 41 were slightly injured, three seriously and one dead, the statement added.

The train, which was traveling between Manresa and Barcelona, ​​derailed due to a landslide after several days of heavy rains in the region, said train operator Adif in a statement.

The area was equipped with nets to retain the rocks "but it did not resist the landslide," said Minister of Transport, Jose Luis Abalos, on Cadena Ser radio. He said his department would investigate the cause of the accident.

According to the local press, landslides have already caused train derailment in the same area in 2009 and 2011.
