According to the Bellingham police, there is no indication that one or the other of the victims knew or knew the perpetrator.

A man was killed and two people were injured after being attacked by an unknown person in Bellingham on Saturday, police said. A suspect was arrested.

Police responded to a call, at 11:05 am, from a woman struck in the face by a stranger in block 800 of Lakeway Drive, before her bike ride, said Claudia Murphy, spokesperson for the police department of Bellingham a statement sent via email. She suffered minor injuries.

Shortly after, officers responded to a report stating that a man had been assaulted near Lincoln and Potter Streets by a man who fit the description of the first assailant. The man had more serious injuries than the woman, but they do not put his life at risk, Murphy said.

Police received another report at 1119 from a person who found a man "seriously injured" on a trail near Meador Avenue. The man died when the police arrived. Witnesses reported seeing a man who corresponds to the same description as in the other two attacks, while going with blood on his hands and his clothes, according to the statement.

Police searched the area with the help of a K-9 team and were able to arrest a suspect, Jesse R. Reyes, 33, Murphy said. A police officer on leave arrested Reyes without incident.

Reyes was sentenced to Whatcom County Prison for a probable cause of 1st degree murder and 2nd and 4th degree assault, according to the statement.

There is no evidence that the victims knew or knew each other, and the attacks appear to have been "random," Murphy said. An investigation is underway, she added.
