A team of researchers linked intellectual bonds disabled in children to air pollution, pointing out that outdoor exposure can hinder cognitive development.
According to the study funded by Public Health England and published in the Journal of Intellectual Disability Research, mentally retarded British children are more likely than their peers to live in areas heavily polluted by outdoor air.
The team came to the conclusion of an analysis of data from the UK millennium cohort study, a representative sample of more than 18,000 British children born between 2000 and 2002.
"We know that people with intellectual disabilities in the UK are healthier and die earlier than expected.
"This research adds another piece to the puzzle that is to understand why this is the case and what to do about it," said lead author and physician Eric Emerson of the company. 39, University of Sydney.
On average, all ages, children with mental disabilities were 33% more likely to live in areas rich in diesel particles and 30% more likely to live in areas rich in nitrogen dioxide.
"These children were 30% more likely to live in areas rich in carbon monoxide and 17% more likely to live in areas rich in sulfur dioxide," the results showed.
The authors noted that intellectual disability was more prevalent among children living in socio-economically disadvantaged areas, where levels of air pollution were generally higher.
