While the day after Thanksgiving has become less and less important to retailers in recent years, a new consumer survey suggests a more promising Black Friday 2018.

A Reuters / Ipsos poll found that more than a third of Americans plan to shop on Black Friday. Of those who brave sales, the majority plan to buy at least half of their holiday purchases the same day.

The numbers may excite some retailers, however, physical stores will continue to face cyber-transactions from online giants such as Amazon.

While 38% of respondents said they came to shop on Black Friday, 37% of consumers said they intended to shop mostly or completely online, Reuters reported.

Consumer spending over the Thanksgiving weekend, which is considered the beginning of the holiday shopping season, has been declining every year since 2012, even though retailers have fought the trend in lengthening their opening hours and starting sales earlier.

While some retailers are rejecting the Black Friday tradition, many retailers continue to attract customers by offering "room savings" and saving credit cards for one day 's balances. For example, Sears, which went bankrupt last month, got a loan to stay open during the holiday season.

Overall, retailers offer an average discount of 35%, although some offer discounts of up to 60-70%.
