Jobs available in the United States in August exceeded the number of unemployed people seeking active employment by 902,000, the largest gap of this type ever recorded.

US employers have registered for the first time this summer more than seven million job vacancies, reflecting a historically tense labor market that forces some companies to fight to find workers.
There was a seasonally adjusted offer of 7.136 million jobs on the last working day of the month of August, the Department of Labor announced Tuesday. This extends further to a historical record for data dating back to 2000.
The jobs available in August exceeded the number of unemployed people looking for active employment by 902,000, the largest gap ever. Before March, job openings had never exceeded the number of unemployed for more than 17 years of monthly registers.
The number of vacancies has increased by more than one million, or 18%, compared to the previous year, in August. The growth in openings developed just before the unemployment rate fell in September to 3.7%, its lowest level in 49 years.
The broad category of professional and business services, which includes occupations ranging from lawyers to temporary employees, registered the largest increase among major sectors, with 280,000 more openings compared to August 2017. Federal government openings increased by 42,000 last year an increase of 61%, the largest percentage increase among the sectors.
