Lee, 83, died at home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, following Thanksgiving, according to a family statement provided to People.

"Thank you all for your kind words and condolences on the death of my mother, Vernita Lee," Winfrey wrote in a post on Instagram on Monday. "It brings great comfort to our family, knowing that she has lived a good life and that she is now at peace."

Lee was born in Mississippi and gave birth to Winfrey in his youth. Lee and Winfrey's father, Vernon Winfrey, never married.

Moving to Milwaukee where she worked as a maid, Lee entrusted her mother, Hattie Mae Lee, with raising her daughter.

At the age of 6, Winfrey joined his mother and half-siblings, Jeffrey and Patricia, in Milwaukee. She moved to live with her father in Tennessee at age 14.

In 2011, Winfrey revealed on his show that his mother had placed a daughter, also named Patricia, in adoption at birth.

"Most of my life has been an open book," Winfrey said. "I thought nothing could surprise me, but I was wrong."

Lee and the daughter she placed for adoption, Patricia Amanda Faye Lee, were then reunited.

In an interview with a Milwaukee TV channel in 2007, Lee spoke with pride of Winfrey's achievements and the love that she has shown to others through her talk show.

Private funerals have already taken place, according to the family.
