Célie returns to the big screen and this time she sings. Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg announced the production of a musical version of Alice Walker's iconic novel novel The color Purple, adapted from the hit musical, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Winfrey, who played the role of Sofia in the 1985 film adaptation, and Spielberg, who is the director, co-produced the musical with Quincy Jones and Scott Sanders, who co-produced the two Broadway productions with Winfrey.
The color Purple follows the inspiration of Celie who runs through childhood in joy and despair, anguish and hope to discover the power of love and life. The first film stars Whoopi Goldberg in an Oscar-nominated performance as Celie.
The stage adaptation of Walker's novel in 1982 was seen for the first time on Broadway in a 2005 production that earned LaChanze a Tony Award for her turn as Celie; Fantasia won a Theater World Award, taking over the role in the original Broadway montage. The staging of 2015 won the Tony Award for Best Wake of a Musical as well as a Tony for Cynthia Erivo in the role of Celie.
the Purple color the musical features a book by Marsha Norman and a score by Stephen Bray, Brenda Russell and Allee Willis. The original Broadway production was directed by Gary Griffin; John Doyle led the recovery.
Menno Meyjes designed the screenplay for Spielberg's original film. A writer and director for the musical version of the film The color Purple must still be selected.
The cast is also coming. With the current success of cinema at Erivo (Widows, Bad Weather in El Royale, Harriet), it is safe to assume that the actress has a chance to resume her turn on the big screen.
