OR Edmond Medical Center will offer free prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing throughout the month of September for men who fall within the recommended range of tests. September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. PSA tests help to diagnose prostate cancer by testing a specific protein produced by the prostate that is in the bloodstream.
This test is recommended for men aged 55 to 69 years. Men with a family history of prostate cancer or African Americans should consider a PSA test as early as the age of 45. not aware of the presence of cancer without being tested. PSA tests are credited with diagnosing one in five prostate cancer cases.
PSA tests can produce false-positive results in approximately ten percent of the tests administered, resulting in additional tests needed to positively identify the presence of prostate cancer. Men are encouraged to talk to their doctor about the advantages and disadvantages of screening to determine if the test is right for them.
"The PSA test is a valuable tool in the fight against prostate cancer because it can detect the presence of cancer in its infancy. The sooner we are able to diagnose prostate cancer, the more treatment options we have to fight the disease, "said Dr. Ash Bowen, Urologist and Chief of Surgery at OR Edmond Medical Center.

The tests are available throughout the month of September at the outpatient laboratory of the Medical Center OR Center. The ambulatory care laboratory is located in suite 301 of the medical office building on the campus of the OUA Medical Center Edmond. Appointments without appointments are available from 8 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday.
