An instantly recognizable sports personality who has accused President Trump of cheating on golf plans to cast his sights on what risks being a very tight circle of challengers when the president is expected to be re-elected in 2020.
Oscar De La Hoya, Boxing Hall of Fame member and Olympic gold medalist turned boxing promoter, plans to run for the highest office in the country. His interest is preliminary but serious, he told reporters Tuesday in Las Vegas, where he promotes the revenge of the middleweight title between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin Saturday night.
"It's real," De La Hoya said (via the Los Angeles Times) about his aspirations. "It's the beauty of our nation. If Arnold [Schwarzenegger] can be governor, if [Donald] Trump can be president, so why not a Mexican who has won an Olympic gold medal, who is over 35 years old and an American citizen, [the] Presidency? "
De La Hoya, 45, ran a democrat and had a past that included addiction issues and loyalty would come into play.
"As I get older, I feel wiser," he said. "And as I get wiser, I become smarter. And as I get smarter, I start to realize the millions and millions of people who said to me, "Oscar, why do not you introduce yourself to some sort of office? Because you can make a difference. "
De La Hoya vs. Trump would have a story to share. Two years ago, he accused Trump of cheating in a round of golf in 2014 and wondered how anyone who would break the rules of golf could run the country. Trump, who had not yet received the Republican nomination, told The Associated Press that he "respected[s] the game is too hard to deceive and is good enough to have won a number of club championships. He then accused De La Hoya of using the story to sell tickets for a boxing match he was promoting. According to the AP, Eric Trump told his father not to answer the allegations, but Trump denied playing with De La Hoya. "He absolutely lies," said Trump. "Golf is an important thing and I felt that I had to say something."
