This year's Oscars will not award a new Oscar for popular films.

A month after announcing the category "Outstanding Achievement in Popular Cinema," the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released a statement Thursday stating its postponement.

"The Academy has recognized that implementing a new price nine months into the year creates challenges for films already released," the statement said. "The Board of Governors continues to be actively involved in the discussions and will consider and seek further contributions in this category."

Academy Director General Dawn Hudson said, "The introduction of a new award has prompted many reactions and we recognize the need to continue discussions with our members. We have made changes to the Oscars over the years, including this year, and we will continue to evolve while respecting the incredible legacy of the past 90 years.

The category of popular films was considered a possible effort to boost ratings, which reached a record low of 26.5 million viewers in March. The announcement said that "the conditions of eligibility and other key details [would] to be coming "for the category.

Two other changes to the Oscars format were announced in August: keep broadcasting at 3 am and hold the 2020 Oscars earlier than planned – February 9th rather than February 23rd.

Some categories not yet announced will be presented during advertisements, with some "winning moments" that will be published later in the broadcast.

The 2019 Oscars, organized by Jimmy Kimmel, will take place on Sunday, February 24, 2019.

In June, the Academy sent 928 invitations to new members, including TimothedChalamet, Tiffany Haddish, Amy Schumer, Gina Rodriguez, Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, Daniel Kaluuya, Blake Lively, Rashida Jones and Jada Pinkett Smith.
