While adapting the nearly century-old narrative, Bradley Cooper spoke of various ways to reconstruct a pivotal scene from the film's climax. The President of Warner Bros. Group Pictures, Toby Emmerich, revealed some of them in the Variety cover story about Lady Gaga.
[Warning: Spoilers ahead]
Through the four main versions of A star is born, the basic arc leading to the tragic death of the male lead remains the same. Cooper's adaptation led his character, Jackson Maine, to hang out in his home's garage after realizing that his alcoholism and dependence was on his wife Ally (Lady Gaga).
"The first end that I read, [Jackson] swim in the ocean, where he commits suicide, "Emmerich said in a new interview. The scenario we had when he started shooting, he's riding. It was more like the end of Kris Kristofferson [in the 1976 version] with the Ferrari, but with Jackson with the Harley. But Bradley changed his mind and came to see me and presented the idea of what he ended up shooting. I think he was right. When I watch the movie now, I can not imagine that it ends otherwise. "
Cooper also discussed some of his original ideas for the film, including the fact that he wanted a musician to fill the role of Jackson once he had taken on his role as a screenwriter and director (he had already skipped by Clint Eastwood). "I saw this other person I wanted to do, who is a real musician," he added. "But [the studio] would not do the movie with him. "
A source said Variety that Jack White was the musician in question. He was approached before Gaga was brought to the film. A repro for White did not immediately return a request for comment from Rolling stone.
