GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – Always the perfectionist, this Aaron Rodgers.
The quarterback of the Green Packers Packers seemed a bit more mobile playing for a third straight week with a splint on his injured left knee. But he felt he did not have his best day Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.
The defense had his back.
The Packers won seven sacks and earned a shutout for the first time in eight years in a 22-0 win against the Buffalo Bills.
"Yes, we were at the defensive level of the championship and at the offensive level of the non-eliminating teams today. It was not fantastic, far from it, "Rodgers said.
And that was after a laundering.
Rodgers was 22 out of 40 for 298 yards with a touchdown. Green Bay (2-1-1) had a decisive advantage in the total offensive (423-145) and the first tries (22-11).
Rodgers also intercepted a deflected pass and missed the ball early in the fourth quarter. The offensive was not as productive in the second half after a quick start.
"It was as bad as we played in attack with so many yards in a long time," Rodgers said.
Considering that the NFL doubles MVP suffered an injury and that the offense did not have Randall Cobb because of a hamstring injury, the Packers were not that bad. Two 52-yard field goals from Mason Crosby also helped to ward off the attack.
"Aaron ruined everything, I thought he was playing really well," said coach Mike McCarthy. "I think what he's fighting for is a tremendous asset to our football team."
The bills (1-3) were much worse.
Rookie quarterback Josh Allen had three turnovers, including two interceptions and a breakaway late in the fourth quarter. He had 16 out of 33 for 151 yards.
The Bills had a much tougher time on the road in the north of the NFC, a week after a staggering victory in Minnesota.
"I take this one on my shoulders," Allen said. "We can not go as far as the quarterback."
INVOICING BITS
Buffalo managed to force Rodgers to launch his first interception of the year. But a 16-0 lead at halftime was more than enough against the weak Buffalo attack. Even the return of running back LeSean McCoy, who missed a game with a rib injury, did not help Buffalo.
"We were out of pace in attack. We had to find some consistency, "said coach Sean McDermott.
GO TO GRAHAM
Rodgers and Jimmy Graham connected during their first touchdown of the year. Signed during the off-season as a free agent, the track and field team achieved their first official Lambeau Leap after a touchdown at the start of the season.
"Usually they come in clusters, so I hope that's the beginning," said Graham, who finished with 21 yards on three catches.
OTHER AARON
Aaron Jones added 65 yards and 11 carries for the Packers, who slowed down in the second period after a quick attack start. A slasher with a great playing ability, Jones could eventually become the best running back in the Packers' very crowded field.
POUNDER POUNDING
A physical defense for Green Bay allowed the Bills to win eight pts and three turnovers on their first 11 discs. Kyler Fackrell had three bags.
Things went so well for the defender that linebacker Clay Matthews was credited with half a bag after inflicting penalties for smugglers in each of the first three weeks.
"We have to make sure that we set the line of scrimmage and that it sets up the current game, which sets up the passing game," McDermott said. "But you have to make sure that you win your one-on-one no matter what it is."
INJURY
McCoy finished with 24 yards in five races and 13 yards in three receptions. He left the locker room after the match with what appeared to be his heavily enveloped left hand. … Bill WR Kelvin Benjamin took a 34-yard drive before leaving in the third quarter to be assessed for a head injury … S Micah Hyde had a disappointing return to Lambeau after leaving the first quarter due to injury in the groin. Hyde left the Packers as a free agent after the 2016 season. … Packers WR, Geronimo Allison, left in the third quarter for a concussion.
