The October 15 game between the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers has lost some of its brilliance.
The 49ers confirmed Monday that starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo tore his ACL in Week 3 and missed the rest of the 2018 season.
The Packers will welcome the 49ers to Lambeau Field for a clash on Monday night at week 6.
Garoppolo had completed 53 of 89 passes for 718 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions before knee injury at the end of a Sunday race against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The 49ers won Garoppolo's first five starts last season, but started in 2018 with a 1-2 record, defeating the Vikings and the Minnesota Chiefs to lead the Detroit Lions.
Signed to a $ 137.5 million five-year contract for this off season, Garoppolo was to be the centerpiece of the 49ers' revival.
The 49ers will have to turn to quarterback C.J. Beathard, a second-year quarterback who started five games for San Francisco as a rookie. He threw four touchdowns and six interceptions and scored 69.2 on a total of seven games in 2017.
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan trusted Beathard.
"C.J. is as tough and fearless as any quarter I've ever experienced, "said Shanahan via ESPN. "He has the talent of the arm to make every shot and he is extremely intelligent. And I know that's the kind of guy our team also believes in.
The 49ers could also be without cornerback Richard Sherman, who should miss a few weeks after suffering a calf injury.
The Packers host the Buffalo Bills and hit the road to play the Lions before hosting the 49ers at Lambeau Field in Week 6.
