A bomb explosion tore up a busy market in the city of Kalaya in the North West Province of Pakistan Khyber Pakhtunkhwa killing at least 25 people, say the officials.

Abbas Khan, the deputy district commissioner, told Reuters on Friday that a kamikaze had driven a motorcycle into a crowd going to a festival and a market that attracts people from different religious communities before blowing up his explosives .

"It was a suicide explosion at the festival that takes place every Friday," Khan said, adding that among the 25 dead were three members of the Sikh minority community and two security officials.

Twenty-six of the wounded are being treated at a government hospital in Kohat City, about 50 km east of the blast site, said a police officer, Nasrullah, in Al Jazeera.

Police officials said the deadly explosion was caused by "an improvised explosive device concealed in a carton of vegetables" in this isolated town of Orakzai district.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blast in Kalaya city, about 60 km southwest of Peshawar, the provincial capital, police officials said in Al Jazeera.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his human rights minister Shireen Mazari condemned the deadly attack.

Mazari tweeted that the death toll could increase.

"While the United States is failing in Afghanistan, [Pakistan should] be ready for [a] and we must ensure greater security for our tribal areas, in particular the protection of our [people]"she tweeted.

The region is a remote part of the Orakzai tribal district, which recently merged with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, after being ruled directly by Islamabad for decades.

The explosion took place at about the same time that three attackers attempted to storm the Chinese consulate in the port city of Karachi, in the south of the country, during a non-incident. linked to the death of which two members of the police were killed.

The Karachi attack was claimed by separatist group Baloch Liberation Army.
