Pakistan arrest one of the leaders of the Islamist party in Lahore

LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) – The party of a radical Islamist cleric who disrupted daily life with rallies across Pakistan as a result of the acquittal of a Christian woman accused of blasphemy, said that he was arrested by police in Lahore.

In a statement, the Tehreek-e-Labbaik party announced that its leader, Khadim Hussain Rizvi, was arrested on Friday.

The police also arrested many supporters.

The arrests took place weeks after supporters of Rizvi staged violent rallies against the October 31 acquittal of Asia Bibi by the Supreme Court.

Bibi was on death row since 2010 for insulting the Prophet Muhammad.

This angered Rizvi and his supporters who gathered for three days.

Rizvi ended the protest after the authorities declared that Bibi would not leave Pakistan until a petition against his acquittal had been considered.
