Parents of a St. Johns County teenager who died suddenly this week told First Coast News that they had been informed by the Ministry of Health on Thursday that their daughter was suffering from meningitis. First Coast News has not been able to confirm the diagnosis.
Kim, Jessie Melcolm's mother, said she spoke for the last time to her 19-year-old daughter, 19, at Tallahassee Community College on Monday night. Jessie told her mother that she had sore throat and muscles, but she urged her mother not to worry.
When Kim was unable to reach Jessie on Tuesday morning, she sent a message to Jessie's best friend to watch her. The friend found Jessie insensitive.
Jessie's parents stated that their daughter had no health problems and that she was aware of her meningitis vaccines and her booster shots.
Kim Melcolm remembered her daughter as "the light of so many people". There will be a celebration of life in Jessie's memory next weekend.
Jessie was a former cheerleader at the Bartram Trail High School and graduated last year.
First Coast News contacted the Florida Department of Health to confirm the diagnosis of meningitis. The department referred us to the medical examiner, who referred us to the Tallahassee Police Department because Jessie's death is an open case.
First Coast News has not heard from the Tallahassee Police yet.
