BEIJING (Reuters) – Police in northeastern China arrested a driver who had transported a car to a group of children outside a primary school, killing at least five people and injuring 18 others. announced Thursday the official press.

China's central television said the police were investigating the cause of the incident, which occurred around noon in Huludao City, Liaoning Province.

Reuters could not immediately contact the police or local authorities to ask for their opinion. The cause of the driver's behavior was not clear.

In images depicting the crash and broadcast by the media, a group of a few dozen young children cross the road before a dark-colored sedan gets through the traffic jams.

Reuters could not independently verify the images, which quickly became viral on social media.
