A passenger on a Delta Air Lines flight was declared dead Monday night after returning from the flight to Detroit for a medical emergency.

Delta flight 583 took off from the Detroit Metropolitan Airport for Shanghai at 4:35 pm. Around 7:15 pm, a "medical emergency was declared," according to a spokesman for Delta. The crew made the decision to return to Detroit and landed at 22:35.

"The plane landed without incident and the passenger in question was removed," said the spokesman. The passenger was later declared dead by the airport medical staff.

The Associated Press reported that the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office had identified the passenger on Tuesday as Yury Rubel and that he had died as a result of a hypertensive cardiovascular disease. Death has been judged a natural death. The age and the hometown of the passenger were not immediately available.

A spokeswoman for the Wayne County Airport Authority said the agency's public safety team had responded to a medical emergency on a Delta aircraft. When they arrived, they discovered that the passenger had died.

Flight 583 was reprogrammed and took off Tuesday at 8:20.
