NBC 5 investigation learned that passengers on four Southwest Airlines flights to Texas had been exposed to measles in the last 16 days.
Southwest Airlines confirmed that passengers on two flights to and from Dallas Love Field were among those likely to have been exposed and were working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to inform flight passengers.
The CDC usually informs passengers in both rows of an infected person, but with Southwest's open seating policy, it's hard to know who was sitting for everyone on flights to be informed.
A passenger later diagnosed with measles flew on the following flights:
Tuesday August 21st
- Flight 5 from Dallas Love to Houston Hobby
- Flight 9 from Houston Hobby to Harlingen
Wednesday, August 22
- Flight 665 from Harlingen to Houston Hobby
- Flight 44 from Houston Hobby to Dallas Love
Passengers on these four flights are now being asked to monitor the symptoms of measles themselves, including fever, cough, and rash.
Measles is very contagious and spreads in the air when people cough or sneeze.
The Dallas County Health and Social Services Department contacted a passenger with a letter warning that "the incubation period can go up to 21 days after the show. It is very important to monitor the symptoms of measles until September 11, 2018 "
A passenger who received this letter, said Monica Nicholas NBC 5 investigation she is now concerned about some of the symptoms that she has.
"Mostly, as I said, rashes appeared on my legs, I talked to the health department and explained my symptoms, so their advice was to go to the doctor. They did not think I advised to consult my doctor, "Nicholas said.
Southwest Airlines has stated that its fleet is subject to rigorous cleaning and that each aircraft uses hospital-grade HEPA air filtration in the cabin. In addition, they also informed the employees on these flights of the situation.
Health officials said they had not yet seen any cases where passengers on these flights had been infected with measles, but asked passengers to watch each other closely.
