Smoking at home exposes children to the passive inhalation of tobacco that may increase the risk of developing habitual snoring in children, says a new study by Georgia State University . The results showed that children ran a 2% higher risk of snoring for every cigarette smoked at home every day.
Children born to fathers were 45% more likely to snore than non-exposed children. Mothers who smoked increased the risk of developing habitual snoring in their children by up to 90%. Those exposed to prenatal smoke were almost twice as likely to develop habitual snoring.
"Some parents may think that snoring in children is cute. But snoring is often the first step toward the development of sleep apnea and has been linked to hypertension, stroke, and heart disease, "said Lucy Popova, researcher at Georgia State University. The Daily Mail
Sleep apnea is a serious disorder characterized by a regular break in breathing during sleep. Published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, the study examined data from 24 existing studies that included nearly 88,000 children.
The team found that the younger a child is, the more likely he is to develop the habit of snoring. . "Quitting smoking is entirely the best way to preserve your health and the health of your children," said Sophie Balk of the Montefiore Children's Hospital in New York, USA.
However, the study did not show how smoking associated with a higher risk of developing habitual snoring in children.
The risks of passive smoking have also been highlighted in the past. In 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that "the global epidemic of smoking kills nearly six million people each year, of which more than 6,000,000 are non-smokers who die to breathe in secondhand smoke. "
