It was fair to wonder if the Kansas City Chiefs offense would be as strong in Patrick Mahomes' first season as the starting quarterback with veteran Alex Smith in 2017.

The new quarterback of the team has the size, strength and mobility to become something special, but Mahomes has only tried 35 assists as a rookie. He is a risk taker who will probably always be prone to errors, and he has made several notable mistakes this summer.

Meanwhile, the Smith-quarter Chiefs' offense was one of only two in football at over six yards per game, and Smith was the league's highest-ranked passer in 2017. But The organization sacrificed two choices for Mahomes t keep the Texas Tech product on the sidelines much longer, paving the way for an exchange between Smith and Washington Redskins in March.

The Mahomes Chiefs, who scored 38 points in a double-digit victory Sunday at the famous Los Angeles Chargers division, could not win.

The four Kansas City touchdowns in the 38-28 win were started by Mahomes, who completed 15 of 27 passes for 256 yards – and this detail is of utmost importance – a no-turnover performance against a defense quality.

No interception, zero yards lost on bags. I know it's a cliché to say that he looked like a veteran, but he looked like a veteran. Intelligent, patient, composed and cool.

Now not all the Mahomes have received much help from their support team, but this only reinforces the argument that the Chiefs' attack will not fail to become much greener. Their only flagman, aged 22, did not have to carry the full load, and that's all.

His best receiver, Tyreek Hill, reinforced the idea that it is one of the most lethal weapons in football.

The third-year playmaker touched the ball nine times Sunday in Los Angeles. The first contact was a 91-yard touchdown before Mahomes took the field. The second was a 58-yard touchdown in which Mahomes threw the ball at 18 yards and Hill did the rest of the work, giving the leaders 14 points before Mahomes attempted a 15-yard throw past the line of scrimmage. .

With less pressure, Hill's next touch came from Mahomes to a depth of 30 meters. It was still the first quarter. He later earned 20 yards on a deep deflected pass, helping to bail out his Gunslinger quarterback. He opened the third quarter with 21 yards on a single pass from Mahomes, triggering another scoring attempt. In the third quarter, he managed a 34-yard grab by Mahomes on another touchdown attempt. And the icing on the cake is that he scored his third touchdown to give Kansas City an insurmountable lead in the fourth quarter.

So if you keep the score, Hill scored three of the five Kansas City touchdowns. But he was also responsible for 59 yards on four touchdowns on the other two Kansas City touchdowns. He and Mahomes provided nearly all of the Kansas City offense during a day when defenseman Kareem Hunt only racked up 3.1 yards per run.

In addition to the kick return score, Hill captured seven of the eight assists he was targeting for a career-high 169-yard-high.

Is it sustainable? Of course not. Hill will end up having days off, or at least not so ridiculous days. And Mahomes will eventually make turnovers. The Chiefs will probably not go 16-0 and they will certainly not average 38 points per game.

But Chiefs Chief Andy Reid is an offensive genius who has a special approach to quarterbacks and players around these quarterbacks.

Hill was a fifth-round pick two years ago, but under Reid, he has already scored 23 touchdowns as receiver, running back and man back, and he's off to his third Pro Bowl in as many NFL campaigns.

Smith was a No. 1 pick in San Francisco, but his results have improved considerably under Reid's tutelage, culminating in a career year in 2017. And Reid also made the most of Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb, Jeff Garcia and Michael Vick in Philadelphia.

Reid will always put his quarter in a position to succeed. That's what it does best.

This is not to say that Mahomes can start preparing a speech in the Hall of Fame. The No. 10 pick in total has entered the Raw League. His mechanisms are still not perfect and he will undoubtedly have to work on his decision-making skills. There will eventually be growth pains.

But Sunday, Reid, Hill and the Chiefs showed that there was probably no better place in football for a promising young quarterback taking the reins.

The Chiefs do not yet know exactly what they have at Mahomes, but they know what they have with Reid, Hill, Hunt, winger star Travis Kelce (who was hardly needed for Sunday's offensive explosion) ) and even Spencer Ware, Conley and Watkins, and it is extraordinary.

These circumstances alone should allow the entire offense – and Mahomes and Hill in particular – to dominate the coming years.
