After the United States was slain at the 2014 Gleneagles 2014 Ryder Cup, Phil Mickelson openly criticized Captain Tom Watson for mishandling the team, including a poor team meeting.

Patrick Reed, nicknamed "Captain America" after his impressive performance in the Ryder Cups of 2014 and 2016, has qualified for the 2018 Ryder Cup with a brilliant 4-1-2 record alongside his partner Jordan Spieth. But Reed and Spieth were not paired in Paris, captain Jim Furyk having decided to associate Spieth with a friend, Justin Thomas, and matching Reed to Tiger Woods. Many expected Thomas to be paired with Rickie Fowler, as both teams won the Presidents Cup last year, but Fowler was paired with Dustin Johnson and both teams failed.
Reed told the New York Times that Spieth was his first choice for a partner despite the fact that he was not a good friend, as their chemistry had led to earlier successes in match play. The 2018 Masters champion felt that the team was headed by a "matchmaking system" that ignored all players' opinions, calling Spieth to make the decision not to be matched.
"The problem is obviously that Jordan does not want to play with me," Reed told Karen Crouse of The New York Times. "I have no problem with Jordan.In the end, I m not care if I like the person with whom I am twinned or if the person likes me as long as it works and that the team succeeds, he and I know how to improve each other, we know how to do the job. "
Thomas and Spieth went 3-1 and were the best on the US side, while Reed and Woods left with a 0-2 score with Furyk sitting at Reed during both afternoon sessions.

"For someone who is as successful at the Ryder Cup as I am, I do not think it's smart to sit down twice," Reed said.
The United States has not won a Ryder Cup in Europe since 1993 and, despite their attempts to become a coherent unit, the Americans have failed largely because they do not seem to play against each other as they do Europeans.

The Ryder Cup will return to the United States in 2020 when the Whistling Straits Golf Course will host the prestigious event.
