It may be time to reduce expectations for the New England Patriots' run this season.
After sacking Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson three times and lobbied throughout the first week, the Patriots have been hoping for seven goals this season. But the Patriots lost their best defenseman, defensive end Trey Flowers, to a concussion in Sunday's first quarter and never recovered in the 31-20 loss to the second week against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Patriots did not return a quarter of the Blake Bortles Jaguars and barely passed it all night. This gave Bortles plenty of time to hit big receivers and get big winnings, finishing the day 29 of 45 for 377 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.
Here is the complete list of proposals and statistics provided by Pro Football Focus from the second week:
RUSH PASS
DE Adrian Clayborn: five pressed on 20 slaps
DE Keionta Davis: Three pressed on 34 slaps
LB Dont'a Hightower: two pressures on 12 pressures
SS Patrick Chung: two shots on four shots
DE Geneo Grissom: two presses on 17 shots
LB Ja'Whaun Bentley: two shots on eight shots
DE Trey Flowers: we're on five snaps
DT Malcom Brown: we press on 27 shots
DT Lawrence Guy: we're on 25 snaps
DT Danny Shelton: we press on 26 shots
– The Patriots lobbied Bortles 20 times in 52 assists. Last week, the Patriots brought 28 pressures, including three sacks, out of 45 takeovers.
– The flowers have really missed the Patriots. He was dominant against the race and the pass of Week 1, and Clayborn, Davis, Deatrich Wise and Grissom could not reproduce his overall play. Wise did not record a single tap.
Bentley and Clayborn sometimes struggled to contain Bortles. The QB Jags ran six times for 35 yards.
PASSENGER COVER
CB Jonathan Jones: four catches on six targets for 84 yards, TD
CB Eric Rowe: 3-3, 68 yards, TD
CB Jason McCourty: 4-6, 48 yards
LB Kyle Van Noy: 5-6, 38 yards, INT
CB Stephon Gilmore: 4-9, 36 yards, TD, PBU
FS Devin McCourty: 3-3, 35 yards
SS Patrick Chung: 3-3, 29 yards, TD
FS Duron Harmon: 1-2, 22 meters
LB Dont'a Hightower: 2-2, 17 yards
– Rowe was established in the first period for Jason McCourty after amassing two catches for 46 yards with a touchdown. After Patrick Chung suffered a concussion in the first period, Rowe replaced him in the Patriots' defense and immediately conceded a 22-yard effort. It was a tough performance for Rowe, and it will be interesting to see who will start Week 3 against the Detroit Lions.
– Jones covered the 61 meters of Dede Westbrook. Jones was caught in a traffic jam on a passing road and could not bounce back. Jones also forced Van Noy's interception with solid coverage.
– The Patriots had a hard time crossing the roads all match. Players after the match noted that it was something that they had to correct before the third week.
DEFENSE OF EXECUTION
DT Lawrence Guy: five stops
DE Keionta Davis: two stops
DE Trey Flowers: a stop
LB Elandon Roberts: a stop
SS Patrick Chung: a stop
FS Devin McCourty: a stop
– Guy was a brilliant point on the defense of the Patriots. He was the best defender of the Patriots on PFF.
– The Jaguars did not start calling on Leonard Fournette and ran 24 times for 104 yards.
– The Patriots missed Flowers' ability to set the tone in the running game. It's something that Davis and Wise had difficulties with early in their careers.
PROTECTION PASS
RT LaAdrian Waddle: bag, three hits in a hurry
LG Joe Thuney: QB hit, three in a hurry
LT Trent Brown: three hurry
RB Rex Burkhead: the bag
RG Shaq Mason: success of QB
C David Andrews: hurry up
TE Rob Gronkowski: hurry up
FB James Develin: hurry up
– Of the players who were on pass protection, only running back James White came out clean.
– Waddle abandoned the backpack to Dante Fowler Jr.
– Burkhead gave up a Hayden backpack in the fourth quarter.
ACCURACY OF PASSES
– Of the 11 failures of quarterback Tom Brady, three were fumbles and two while under pressure.
– PFF has not accused the patriots of falling for the second week in a row. A no-return to rookie Sony Michel was deemed elusive by PFF.
– Brady was 0-of-2 on throws of 20 yards or more.
– Brady's got rid of the ball on average 2.35 seconds. Brady got rid of the ball in 2.62 seconds in 2017.
Attacker
RB Sony Michel: a failed tackle
RB James White: a failed tackle
– The Patriots should just hope that Michel and Rex Burkhead are still rusty after missing the pre-season.
– Michel had a good run of 15 yards, but he also seemed pedestrian.
– Burkhead played sparingly, doing most of his work in the first and fourth quarters.
– White has never been a runner between tackles, doing most of his work on the field. He carried the ball four times for 11 yards. It was probably four unnecessary transfers.
