The patriots of New England are show interest Patrick Peterson, cornerback of the Arizona Cardinals, told Bryant McFadden of CBS Sports. The source of McFadden? His cousin, Patrick Peterson.
Sounds pretty reliable.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday earlier that Patterson wanted to be traded in the Cardinals before the Oct. 30 deadline for the NFL. McFadden seemed to confirm this report via Twitter.
Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks said on Monday that the team would not trade his all-pro cornerback.
But let's call Wilks bluff.
Peterson has a salary of $ 11 million this season. He is under contract for the 2020 season. His pro-rated salary for the last nine weeks of the season is $ 5.8 million. His pro-rated salary over the last 10 weeks of the season is $ 6.5 million.
The Patriots currently have just over $ 5.2 million in salary cap. They will need an excess of maximum space just to end the season to pay for unlikely alignment bonuses.
Thus, the Patriots should release money just for trading unless the Cardinals facilitate the treatment of the cornerback by eating a capitalized space and converting the base salary into signing bonuses. Cardinals currently have $ 8.4 million in salary caps.
Peterson would team up with Stephon Gilmore for perhaps the best corner duo in the NFL. Peterson only allowed 16 catches on 28 targets for 134 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions this season for a 399 ranking.
The Patriots do not necessarily need cornerback support with Gilmore, Jason McCourty, Jonathan Jones, Jackson JC, Keion Crossen and Eric Rowe, currently injured in the groin, on their deep chart. But the Patriots' defense as a whole has struggled this season, and Peterson would be giving the unit a big boost.
The Patriots are currently ranked 25th for authorized passing yards, 25th for all yards allowed and 20th for points allowed. They are fifth in interceptions per game.
The clearest needs of the Patriots are at the defensive and linebacker level, but adding an elite cornerback would ease the pressure on the other levels of defense.
If the Patriots could find a way to add Peterson, and if it did not cost them too much, then that would be obvious. But from now on, the Cardinals say that they are not separating from Peterson. And even if they change their minds, we do not know how much it will cost to acquire it.
