CHICAGO (AP) – Cubs reliever Pedro Strop will miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury, leaving NL Central leaders to ask some major questions in the back of their field.
The team announced the injury after Strop underwent an MRI on Friday.
Strop is close to Chicago since Brandon Morrow was placed on the disabled list on July 18th. He has recorded 11 saves on 13 occasions since and 13 saves on the season. He is 6-1 with an MRA of 2.26 out of 59 2/3 innings in 60 appearances.
Unless the Cubs can not make an exchange, manager Joe Maddon said before Friday's game against the Cincinnati Reds he was considering getting closer to the veterans, including Jesse Chavez and Steve Cishek, to finish the games.
Strop injured his hamstrings as he attempted to take first place on a double-solter in the 10th round of the Cubs 4-3 win in Washington on Thursday. It's only the second at the end of the season for the right-handed 33-year-old.
Strop threw 1 2/3 innings against the Nationals to win. He was ready to launch the bottom of the 10th after the Cubs took the lead and was allowed to beat with the bases loaded and go out.
Morrow, put away with the right bicep inflammation, expects to launch a simulated match on Saturday.
