Phil Mickelson was the host of the KPMG Windy City Skills Challenge, which kicked off the 2018 PGA Women's Championship on Monday at Soldier Field. The event included five skill stations for children in the Chicago area and a handful of Chicago professional athletes.
"I like to help develop golf," said Mickelson, "and that's a very important part of it."
Bulls goaltender Kris Dunn and sky guard Diamond DeShields hosted a knockout challenge. Daniel Bears quarterback Chase Daniel and kicker Cody Parkey were in charge of the pass and field challenges. Red Stars goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and midfielder Dax McCarty were responsible for the football challenge. Finally, Mickelson and LPGA star Mariah Stackhouse helped the children at the putting and chipping stations.
After the children's stations, all the athletes took part in some challenges. The teams were separated by the sport. All four teams competed in passing, shredding and basketball challenges. Naeher and McCarty were the winners.
After hitting a ball in motion at the US Open this month, Mickelson was at the center of a major golf controversy. After this storm, he wanted to become a positive force in the golf landscape.
"Since I apologized, the best thing I can do now is try to promote the game in a positive way," Mickelson said.
