Authorities are trying to find the person who let a young pit bull drown in a cage at the edge of a rising tide.

A person walks his dog in the Veterans Memorial Park in Highlands, New Jersey, spotted the little dog curled up in the cage on a stretch of sand between a watertight bulkhead and the water on Monday morning.

"While passers-by were investigating, they spotted a black metal cage with a small dog curled up inside the cage, the cage was on a small stretch of sand between the bulkhead and the inside of the cage. The good Samaritan climbed the wall and saved the dog, "said a statement on the Facebook page of the Monmouth County District Attorney's Office. "If it's not for the heroic rescue act of the good Samaritan, the dog could potentially drown."

Officials estimate that the dog was placed between 4 am and 6 am, depending on the tide schedule.

Pit Bull was taken to the Highland Police Station.
