PM looks at Aust's Embassy in Jerusalem

Prime Minister Scott Morrison could follow the example of US President Donald Trump and move the Australian Embassy to Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

Mr Morrison is expected to make an announcement on Tuesday as part of a foreign policy statement on Israel in Canberra.

The prime minister also thanked the candidate for the Wentworth by-election of the Liberal Party, Dave Sharma, a former ambassador of Australia to Israel, for raising the issue.

"He argues that this can be done in accordance with Australia's long-standing position … It actually changes the way the problem is designed," Morrison told Fairfax Media.

Wentworth, former Malcolm Turnbull blue ribbon elector in Sydney, has a large Jewish community and voters will go to the polls this weekend.

If Australia proceeds, she will follow the United States who moved earlier this year into her embassy, thus recognizing the holy city of Jerusalem as the "true" capital of Israel.

It would also depart from the position taken by former Prime Minister Turnbull and former Foreign Minister Julie Bishop.

Until now, only the United States and its ally, Guatemala, have moved their embassies to Jerusalem.
