NEW YORK (AP) – A car The wreck of the Brooklyn Bridge killed one person on Wednesday and caused a fire that engulfed three vehicles and cut off a key New York City artery early in the morning from downtown to one of the days the most busy of the year.
The violent shock of 7 am on the side of the bridge bound for Brooklyn sent a column of black smoke rising above the historic beach. Motorists stranded by the wreckage got out of their car to watch a group of firefighters work to put out the fire.
Police identified the deceased as Kristopher Hambas, 32, of Scarsdale, New York State. Six people were injured, two of whom were hospitalized for life-threatening injuries. The others refused medical care.
The entire bridge was closed to traffic for about an hour. Major traffic jams continued to spread on the surrounding roads as it reopened, starting with the tracks to Manhattan.
Photographs posted by passers-by on social media showed the charred carcasses of three vehicles and a fourth just a few steps away, with bodily injury.
The build-up of chain reactions began when a Ford truck traveling from the Brooklyn side to Brooklyn found itself face to face with a Nissan, which forced the Nissan to hit the median from the center, the police said. The truck then hit the cement barrier and ignited. The Volkswagen also equipped an SUV from the rear of the vehicle, which made it bump into the back of a Jeep Liberty, police said.
The wreckage occurred on a portion of the bridge, above the Brooklyn side of the East River, near the point where drivers engage to exit ramps and surface roads. The fire was a few meters from a place where crowds of tourists were entering the pedestrian and cycle path of the bridge.
