OREM – A resident of Orem shot dead a man found in his garage Monday morning, police said.

The alleged intruder died a few hours later at a local hospital.

Just after 7 o'clock in the morning, a man stood outside his home, at 364 N. 800 West, when he heard what looked like someone in his unattached garage, said Lieutenant Craig Martinez of the police in Orem. The owner entered his home to retrieve a small handgun and returned to the garage.

At that moment, there was a "confrontation", said Martinez. The details of what happened between the two men were not immediately published.

The owner fired "several" shots, hitting the intruder, he said. The owner then called 911.

The owner was interviewed by the police on Monday. Martinez added that the detectives were also obtaining search warrants before entering the garage and residence.

The man who was shot was a 49-year-old resident of Orem, Martinez said, adding that he was not a man the police often dealt with.

His name was not published immediately pending the notification of his family.
