Police in North Carolina arrested five people on Saturday night as looters began to enter stores while tropical storm Florence caused chaos in the area.

Wilmington police confirmed the arrests on Twitter but did not immediately release the identity of the five people.

"Charges are pending and these details will be published as soon as they are available," police said.

The authorities said around 13:30 they became aware of the looting taking place at Dollar General on 5e and Dawson Streets, but management initially asked them not to intervene at the moment.

They then said on Twitter that they were working to identify the thieves and that they would "charge them to the fullest extent of the law."

In response to reports of looting, the city of Wilmington has extended its curfew for the affected area. A tweet spelled out the details:

"In response to the looting in the area, an extended curfew is now in place for the block between 13, 14, Greenfield and Martin Streets. This curfew came into effect at 5:00 pm and will remain so until 6 am run from 10 pm to 6 am. "

The National Hurricane Center said Saturday afternoon that catastrophic floods were expected in parts of the Carolinas, while Florence remained stationary in the region. At least 11 deaths have been linked to Flo so far.
