SYDNEY – The police made their first arrest in cases of sabotage of strawberries in Australia, in which sewing needles were found in fruit sold in six states.

Queensland State Police said they arrested My Ut Trinh, 50, and charged her with seven counts of property contamination.

Insp. John Walker of the State Crime Command stated that she was working in the strawberry industry near the town of Caboolture, north of Brisbane.

She was scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Each count is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The Australian strawberry industry was devastated after fruit recalls were ordered following the discovery of the first needle in September and several other actions considered copying.

No injuries were reported.
