HONOLULU – The Honolulu police arrested Arnold Berdon, a mixed martial arts fighter, charged with attempted murder after apparently punching a woman in the head, face and ribs to another fighter.

His wife, Rachael Ostovich Berdon, filed an application for interim relief, claiming that he had struck her Sunday after a party with her family. She said that she had fallen to the ground, out of breath and escaped through a balcony. The 27-year-old woman reported spitting blood and vomiting several times.

His representative, Brian Butler-Au, said on social media that Ostovich Berdon would not participate in a UFC fight against Paige VanZant scheduled for Jan. 19 because of his injuries.

Berdon, 27, was in custody on Wednesday after being made the day before. The police refused to make him available for comment. His lawyer's name was not immediately available.

Ostovich Berdon's petition says that he also struck her in May, when he repeatedly hit her thighs and left him bruising.

A judge granted the restraining order that forbids Berdon to address Ostovich Berdon and the couple's daughter, who is about 5 years old.

Butler-Au said that Ostovich Berdon was home after his hospitalization and that he would come back for checkups on the fracture of the orbital bone. He said the family is asking for confidentiality while she "sorts" what happened.

Butler-Au said some people had accused Ostovich Berdon's team of downplaying the importance of the incident, but added that this was not the case. He said that they were trying to be sensitive to their daughter's situation.

"The girl was not there, but obviously the girl has a father, and that's Arnold, and now Arnold has to assume, pay the consequences for what he's done," he said. he said by phone from China, where he was going for a UFC event.
