A police officer from Gwinnett County was shot dead near Snellville on Saturday afternoon, according to the department.
The officer, who was not identified, was in critical condition at the Gwinnett Medical Center, police spokesman Jake Smith said at a news briefing.
Some "dozens" of officers and police dogs were looking for people involved in the area, Smith said. The DeKalb County police were helping.
The shooting occurred when police approached a suspicious vehicle near Shiloh Middle School, according to Smith.
Shots were fired from inside the vehicle, hitting an officer. Smith said that he was not sure that the officers fired shots.
The shooting took place after three shootings involving officers in Georgia on Thursday, which resulted in two deaths.
In one of the previous shootings, a state policeman had been shot down a short distance along I-75 South in Bartow County, but had survived because he wore a bulletproof vest. According to the Georgian patrol, two soldiers fired back and killed the gunman.
The other shooting death occurred at Monroe when a man with a replica of Thompson allegedly pointed him at an officer, according to the GBI.
In the third incident, a suspect shot at the police in Richland, but no one died.
Officers in Georgia have shot down 74 civilians so far this year, according to the GBI. Last year, there were 97 such shootings.
