TROY, Mo. – A Missouri mother is accused of stealing and using drugs intended for her terminally ill daughter.
According to the police, officers were rushed to a doctor's office on Monday, September 10, where they learned that a 20-year-old terminally ill woman was receiving palliative care. Police learned that her mother and her primary caregiver, Carol Ballweg, had not provided fentanyl and oxycodone prescribed for the woman's pain. Police said that the doctor's office staff made urgent phone calls regarding the woman's care and expressed concerns about Ballweg's requests for orders to be filled sooner than necessary.
Drug testing did not reveal any signs of the drug prescribed in the 20-year-old woman's system, and at that time her prescriptions were no longer met.
The doctors also advised the police of bed sores on the victim and said the Missouri Department of Health and Seniors was conducting an investigation.
The police made contact with DHSS investigators, who also reported receiving complaints from the woman's health care provider about drug problems.
A search warrant was executed at Ballweg's home on 11 September, at which point the police said that Ballweg had confessed to being opioid dependent and had confessed to taking his daughter's medicine and using it herself.
She has been charged with four counts of theft of a controlled substance and two counts of abuse against an elderly, disabled or vulnerable person. The cash deposit was set at $ 100,000 and Ballweg was sentenced to have no contact with her daughter.
