A viral video of police officers pointing their weapons at two Rowan University students and putting them in handcuffs after responding to a report on an armed man sparked controversy.
The incident occurred on Monday around 17 hours. on the parking lot of the Rowan University Campus in Glassboro, New Jersey at Mimosa Hall.
The Glassboro police have identified a vehicle that they believe would belong to someone who was allegedly armed with a handgun, officials said Rowan University.
"Since it was believed that one of the occupants of the vehicle was armed, the police followed the procedures and unsheathed their weapons until all occupants left the vehicle and were searched." , wrote a spokesman for Rowan University to students.
A video of the incident shows at least three officers pointing their guns at the two students inside the car, namely Altaif Hassan, a senior from Trenton, New Jersey, and Giovanna Roberson, a student. first year of Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
In the video, Hassan first comes out of the vehicle, raises his hands and turns back towards the police car while the police point their weapons at him. The officers then place him with handcuffs.
The officers then ordered Roberson to do the same and handcuffed her as well.
After a search of the two students, the officers determined that none of them were armed and were released, said Rowan University.
Hassan then posted the video on his Facebook page.
"I can not be silent until my voice is important," Hassan writes. "I'm hurrying. If you believe in the cause, share it for culture. Everyone should know that this kind of harassment must stop. "
Hassan's video went viral and sparked controversy online.
The Association of Student Governments at Rowan University sent a message that they were in contact with Hassan and Roberson, as well as "competent university administrators". A public meeting at which students will discuss their concerns regarding the incident is scheduled at Rowan University Student Center.
