His victory means that Anwar, former spokesman for the Malaysian reform and former deputy prime minister, is close to the successor to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, Bernama reported.

The siege won by Anwar came after 68-year-old outgoing president Danyal Balagopal released him on 12 September to allow Anwar to return to parliament, Bernama said.

Anwar was jailed for sodomy in 2015 and was pardoned by the King of Malaysia in May. He was sentenced to five years in prison for sodomy, which he said was politically motivated.

After her early release, it was thought that Anwar was "impatient" to return to politics, said Meredith Weiss, a professor of political science at the State University of New York at Albany.

Mahatir, the prime minister, has pledged to hand over power two years from now.
