Pope Francis is distressed by the Jewish community of Pittsburgh after the massacre perpetrated in a synagogue, denouncing "the act of inhuman violence" and praying for the "flames of hatred" that fueled it to cease.
Francis led prayers for Pittsburgh on Sunday in St. Peter's Square, a day after an armed man who had expressed his hatred against Jews opened fire in the synagogue during the Sabbath service, killing 11 people.
Francis prayed for the dead, the wounded and their families. He says, "We are all hurt by this act of inhuman violence." He prayed that God "will help us extinguish the flames of hatred that are developing in our societies".
Francis has often denounced the violence inspired by religion and denounced the ease with which firearms are available, calling the arms manufacturers "merchants of death".
