You might soon own an iconic piece of the history of space exploration. To mark the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, Neil Armstrong's family is auctioning items from the personal collection of astronaut memorabilia in early November.

The auction of 3,000 items includes one of the Armstrong Gemini Project's flight suits and a gold pin that he wore on his first trip into space.

Objects that accompanied Armstrong during the Apollo 11 mission, including a centennial flag of his alma mater, Purdue University, as well as fragments of the wing and propeller of the first aircraft of the Wright brothers, were also auctioned.

"Neil Armstrong and his family had these items in their possession for decades and they were great guardians," said Todd Imhof, executive vice president of Heritage Auctions. "They have generously donated and loaned certain items to various museums over the years and his sons have now decided that the time has come to share these items and sell them to the community of collectors of spaces."

The auction also includes a pencil drawing that Armstrong created as the first grader in 1936 and his Boy Scout cap.

Release of the new biopic this weekend "First man" with Ryan Gosling in the role of Armstrong, should only help boost sales.

"I think this interest in the film or its renewed interest in Neil Armstrong's time as an astronaut could very well spark more interest in his artifacts and his family-sold memorabilia." said Imhof.

Last year, a collection bag used by Armstrong containing traces of moon dust auctioned for $ 1.8 million.
