NEW CITY – An international traveler who has contracted measles may have increased the risk of exposure for residents of Rockland, Westchester and Bergen counties.

The Rockland County Health Department issued a warning Sunday after learning that the person had traveled to several locations in the three counties. The warning urges members of high-risk groups to immediately contact a health care provider if they go to the same places.

"We are working diligently to monitor the situation and protect the measles community," said Dr. Patricia Scnhabel, Rockland Health Commissioner, in a press release. "We will keep residents informed of any updates."

Pregnant women, children under 6 months, immunodeficient persons and those who have not been vaccinated or were born before 1957 and who have immunity problems are considered to be at high risk of contracting measles.

Patients are considered infectious four to four days after the onset of the measles rash.
