Pre-snap penalties crippling, frustrating Jets: 'Good teams do not do that'

CHICAGO – Five false starts. Two neutral-zone offenses. Six different players.

The Jets did a tremendous job of crippling all over Sunday's 24-10 loss to the Bears at Soldier Field.

In total, they were flagged 10 times. Eight of them were accepted for a total of 45 yards.

But it was seven pre-snap shots that really killed the Jets and stunted their momentum in a second straight loss.

"The good teams do not do that," cornerback Morris Claiborne said.

The Jets clearly did not have the necessary discipline against the Bears. Neal Sterling, Chris Herndon, Brandon Shell, James Carpenter and Kelvin Beachum were all called for false starts. Only once did the Jets overcome it to pick up a first down.

Leonard Williams 'neutral-zone offense helped set up the Bears' second touchdown, which certainly was not helpful.

For his part, quarterback Sam Darnold was clearly frustrated by the miscues. When it comes to what caused the false starts, he briefly gave his teammates an out – "guys just being antsy" – before saying there's "no excuse" for false starts and that the Jets "have a little bit better."

Then Darnold circled back to the penalties – unprompted – three other times throughout his five-minute, 13-question press conference.

An assessment of his own performance, "I think on our first seven drives, we had five penalties in those drives."

A question about the Bears' run defense eventually turned into, "We had some penalties out there, so I think that in the first half that's what kind of killed us."

A statement on the Jets' persistence and fight became: "Without looking at the movie, it's obvious that we have to cut down the penalties.

Obviously, it's a problem the Jets have to fix. Outside linebacker Brandon Copeland called it "not acceptable."

Sunday's performance is in the NFL's top 10 most-penalized teams pre-snap, which is not exactly an achievement to brag about.

"The teams that win the Super Bowl and are in the playoffs, they do not do that," Claiborne said. "They do not jump offsides, they do not have those costly penalties and stuff like that."
