NEWARK, N.J. – Health officials are investigating bacterial infections in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of a New Jersey hospital following the death of a premature baby.
The state health department has discovered four cases of Acinetobacter baumannii at the University Hospital of Newark since October 1st. The baby was carrying the bacteria and was transferred to another facility where he died. The ministry says the exact cause of death is under investigation due to aggravating medical conditions.
The department said it found major deficiencies in the control of injections at the hospital and ordered a correction plan.
The bacteria can cause pneumonia or serious infections of the blood or sores.
The cases are unrelated to the virus that infected 19 patients and killed seven in a pediatric rehabilitation center in New Jersey.
