Abe will tour a $ 40 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) project run by Japan's Inpex Corp., according to Sky News and ABC News.

Mr Abe will also use this visit to consolidate military ties with Australia as a result of an agreement reached between the two countries to conduct joint training exercises and to increase cooperation in the field of defense.

Abe's visit to Darwin would be the first of a Japanese leader since the Japanese army hit its main military port, killing more than 250 people in several bombings in 1942 and 1943, media reports said.

Abe will visit Darwin before attending the APEC Leaders Summit in Port Moresby.
